Each equine discipline has its own criteria for when a horse is past its prime. FPE's goal is to ensure working horses avoid mistreatment and neglect as they age by contributing a small part of the income they earn to retirement accounts during their working years.

Horses are often discarded when no longer suitable for the job for which they were originally purchased. They can be sent off to auction once they become a financial burden and a still useful and wonderful horse can unintentionally land in a slaughter yard.

The FPE Program / Benefits for Owners

  • Donate the working horse to FPE while still productive and upon acceptance by FPE.

  • Owners receive a tax break for the value of the horse, knowing its future is secure.

  • After donation, the retirement account is funded by lease fees earned while the horse continues to work.

  • Excess lease fees and targeted donations spill over to other needy horses’ retirement accounts.

  • The program can be a safe alternative for horses whose owners are ready to graduate to the next mount.

  • Ensures a humane outcome for horses that need a less stressful but still productive job.

Benefits for Trainers

  • A timely and perfect solution for customers who are ready to change mounts.

  • The donated horse can stay in the current training program for another customer as a leased horse.

  • A percentage of the lease fee is paid to the trainer who places the horse with the ideal rider.

  • FPE is a trusted resource to acquire appropriate horses for clients.

  • FPE will provide proper placement for every horse after a through evaluation of suitability.

  • Horses in working condition are leased out or placed in appropriate work situations.

  • Aging horses can be leased to trainers, riding academies, and individuals for less intensive work than their previous job. The lease fees earned go towards the horses retirement.

  • Eventually horses can be placed in a non-riding therapy program or a permanent, loving retirement home.

  • If injured, horses can be laid up and rehabbed once ready for work again.
